Which is easier, the IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo?

While the difficulty of any test is subjective, the Duolingo English Test is just as “tough” (or as “easy”) as other English tests (like the TOEFL and IELTS) because scores on the test correspond to a test taker’s English proficiency. You can get an idea of your score by taking our completely free practice test (which includes free score estimates).

You can also check out our Official Guide for Test Takers. This guide helps to explain the test structure and question types, includes sample questions (and answers), and provides test-taking strategies, writing tips, and speaking tips.

Having said that, many students find the Duolingo English Test format to be more convenient and less stressful, because:

  • You can take the test from home, from your computer, without traveling to a test center;
  • You can take the test online at any time, without an appointment;
  • You can finish in under 1 hour—other tests take over 3 hours!

And of course, the Duolingo English Test is only $49, which is a fraction of the cost of other tests. It is also accepted by over 3,500 institutions around the world! Our goal is to make testing convenient, fast, and affordable.
